Wow what a week!

The CWSF was held in Edmonton, Alberta last week and the HSTE was proud to send 5 stellar finalists to participate. We had 2 participants in the Senior category (Avalon Lively and Harry Nickerson) 2 at Intermediate (Mohammad Al Mahbir and Elie Nickerson) and 1 Junior (Tya Dueck). This was the first Canada Wide for Tya, Elise and Mohammad but they had some truly experienced leaders in Avalon and Harry who were attending their 3rd and 4th Canada Wide Fairs, respectively.

The team was welcomed to Edmonton with celebration and fanfare, because getting to CWSF is an accomplishment on its own! Over the week finalists had the chance to tour the University of Alberta campus, take part in a variety of lab experiences, visit the West Edmonton mall and Fort Edmonton park and of course lots of time for networking with fellow finalists.

Of course, there was also judging and an awards ceremony and we are excited to share that Halifax had another successful year!

  • Excellence in Astronomy, Intermediate – Mohammad Jamir Al Mahbir
  • Excellence Award, Bronze (Junior) – Tya Dueck
  • Excellence Award, Silver (Senior) – Harry Nickerson
  • Excellence Award, Gold (Senior) – Avalon Lively
  • Challenge Award, Disease and Illness (Senior) – Avalon Lively
  • Youth Can Innovate Award (Senior) – Avalon Lively

For context, in each category there are 30 bronze medalists, 20 silver and 10 gold.

There were 8 Senior projects that were selected for the Youth Can Innovate award, and of those 8, four were chosen for an additional $7000 dollar prize — and Avalon was one of the four!!!!

The HSTE committee is proud of our 2026 finalists, not just for their awards and accomplishments, but for representing Halifax with positivity and integrity.

Congratulations! We can’t wait to see what you do next!
