Divisional Awards
When judging has been completed, the judges’ marks will be used to determine the medals awarded:
- Gold medals to excellent projects
- Silver medals to very good projects
- Bronze medals to good projects
- Honorable Mention ribbon will be given to all other projects
Canada-Wide Science Fair Promotion
Winnipeg School Division supports a total of four students to compete at the Canada- Wide Science Fair (CWSF). This year the CWSF will be held from May 31 – June 7, 2025 in University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB. The top qualifying projects will have the opportunity to attend the CWSF. Commemorative plaques are also awarded to the CWSF winners.
Best in Category Award
The “Best in Category” Award will be presented to the highest-scoring gold-level project within its respective grades and project categories. Please note that not all categories may have a “Best in Category” Award presented; this will depend on the quality and scoring of the projects within each category.
Platinum Award
The “Platinum” Award is a distinguished honor that will be given among projects that have qualified as “Best in Category” in their respective grade categories. This award is designed to recognize the best of the best across all grade levels.
The Winnipeg School Division Award of Excellence in STEAM
This award recognizes projects with outstanding dedication to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Judges will be looking for application of the scientific or engineering method to develop an original idea for a project that relates to a scientific discovery, innovation or creation. Particular attention will be given to projects that use rigorous testing and evaluation for determining outcomes, and detailed research and analysis for discussing impacts of the project in its respective field of STEAM. One award will be given in each grade category.
Ancestral Knowledge Award
This award is for one outstanding project in Grades 7-12.
Community-Sponsored Awards
The Winnipeg School Division is also pleased to partner with members of the community to offer additional awards to our young scientists. It should be noted that judges reserve the right not to give certain awards in a category if the quality of the projects is not of a sufficiently high standard.
The ENERGY AND YOU AWARD sponsored by Manitoba Hydro
This award is awarded to projects that highlight innovation and conservation in the field of energy use and consumption. Judges will be looking for creativity and the overall impact your project will have on future energy needs and conservation.
Particular attention will be given to projects that have the potential to provide realistic solutions to identified problems while maintaining a green agenda. A certificate and monetary award will be presented to each group participant in an outstanding project in each of the grade categories.
University of Manitoba’s SCIENCE INNOVATOR AWARD presented by Rady Faculty of Health Sciences
This award recognizes students who demonstrate originality, creativity, effective presentation skills, and display significant scientific knowledge. Judges will be looking for demonstrated research into a real-world problem with a proposal of a realistic solution and assessing the results for overall impact and potential for change. One award will be given in each grade category.
MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS INNOVATIVE APPLICATION AWARD sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Winnipeg
This Award will be given to students who correctly apply mathematical and/ or statistics concepts to a scientific or everyday challenge. The judges will be impressed by students who can present and correctly apply the laws/ theorems of mathematics and/ or statistics.
The judges will be looking for creativity, originality, innovation, and accuracy; logical reasoning; an understanding of the issue and its solution(s); and a confident delivery of an engaging and well-organized presentation, which includes ideas for future research and real-world applications. An award will be presented to each of the grade categories.
PHYSICS INNOVATOR PRIZE sponsored by the Department of Physics at the University of Winnipeg
This prize recognizes a project that demonstrates outstanding understanding and use of physics. Students who can present and correctly apply the laws and theorems of physics will impress the judges. Projects should explain or test physics phenomena or apply physics to solve problems. Certificates and monetary awards of $50, $100 and $200 will be presented to each project of the grade categories respectively.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AWARD sponsored by Canadian Mennonite University
This award recognizes a project that demonstrates outstanding experimental design. The winning project will feature an explicit hypothesis that explains a phenomenon or pattern. The hypothesis will imply clear predictions, which are then tested by elegant experiments or observations. Judges will be looking for clear communication and understanding of these elements, thorough reasoning, and use of appropriate controls. The Award will be given in the Grade 11-12 category.
SEED, PLANTS AND AGRICULTURE INNOVATOR Awards sponsored by Brett Young Seeds
This award recognizes innovative scientific projects that explore the growth of plants from seed, and concepts that improve crop health, yield and land management. An award will be presented to each of the grade categories.
MEDICAL AWARDS sponsored by Phillip Kawalec
